شرحنا في الدرس السابق { Used to – be/get used to }

The Past Progressive is used:

 يُستخدم الماضي المستمر لكل من:

• to describe an action in progress at a certain time in the past.

 لوصف حدث في حالة استمرارية وذلك وقت محدد  (متى؟) في الماضي.
الأمثلة:

‘What were you doing at 9 o’clock last night?’

ما ذا كنت تفعل عند التاسعة الليلة الماضية؟

‘I was having dinner.’

كنت أتناول العشاء.

• to describe actions that were happening at the same time in the past
(usually with while or as).

 لوصف أفعال كانت تحدث في نفس الوقت في الماضي (عادة تُستخدم مع while أو as  )

While John was cooking, Leo was sleeping.

بينما كان جون يطبخ, كان ليو ينام.

• to describe background scenes to a story.

 لوصف خلفية مشاهد لـ قصة. 

مثال:

There were a lot of people at the station. Some were talking on their mobiles, others were reading a paper and a few were walking up and down.

كان هناك الكثير من الناس في المحطة. كان البعض يتحدثون على هواتفهم النقالة, وآخرين كانوا يقرؤن جريدة ,و بضع يصعدون وينزلون.

• to describe temporary past states or actions.

 لوصف حالات وأحداث مؤقته.

مثال:

My grandfather was writing a book in those days.

كان جدي يؤلف كتابا في تلك الأيام.
