The Past Simple is used:

• to describe a completed action in the past (the time is usually mentioned or implied).
لوصف حدث تام مكتمل في الماضي ( عادة الوقت يكون مُشار إليه أو ضمني : يعني من المعنى تعرف انه ماضي).
مثال:
I bought a mobile phone yesterday.
اشتريت هاتف نقال بالأمس.
• to describe completed actions that happened one after the other in the past.
لوصف أحداث مكتملة حدثت واحدة تلو الأخرى في الماضي.
I walked up to the till, paid and then left the shop.
مشيت حتى درج الخزينة, دفعت ثم غادرت المتجر.
• to describe past habits or repeated actions in the past
لوصف عادات ماضية أو أحداث متكررة في (الماضي).
(often used with adverbs of frequency).
(عادة تُستخدم مع حال التكرار).
When I was younger, I often went jogging in the park.
عندما كنت أصغر, غالبا كنت أذهب هرولة في المنتزة.
• to describe permanent situations in the past.
لوصف حالات دائمة في الماضي.
Jake lived with his grandparents when he was young.
عاش جيك مع جديه عندما كان صغيرا.
• to describe an action in the past that interrupted a ‘longer’ action in progress.
لوصف حدث في الماضي الذي قطع حدث أطول في حالة تقدم.
I was sleeping when the phone rang.
كنت نائما عندما رن التلفون.

The Past Progressive is used:
يُستخدم الماضي المستمر لكل من:
• to describe an action in progress at a certain time in the past.
لوصف حدث في حالة استمرارية عند وقت محدد في الماضي.
‘What were you doing at 10 o’clock last night?’
ماذا كنت تعمل عند العاشرة ليلة البارحة؟
‘I was having a shower.’
كنت استحم.
• to describe actions that were happening at the same time in the past (usually with
while or
as).
لوصف أحداث كانت تحصل في نفس الوقت في الماضي. (عادة يأتي معها while أو as )
While Susan was cooking, her daughter was sleeping.
بينما سوزان كانت تطبخ, ابنتها كانت نائمة).
• to describe background scenes to a story.
لوصف خلفية مشاهدة لـ قصة.
There were a lot of people at the station. Some were talking on their mobiles, others were sleeping and a few were walking up and down.
كان هناك الكثير من الناس في المحطة. كان البعض يتحدثون على هواتفهم النقالة, وآخرين كانوا يقرؤن جريدة ,و بضع يصعدون وينزلون.
to describe temporary past states or actions.
لوصف حالات وأحداث مؤقته.
مثال:
My grandfather was writing a book in those days.
كان جدي يؤلف كتابا في تلك الأيام.
• to describe repetitive or annoying actions (with the adverbs of frequency always, continually, etc.)
لوصف أحداث متكررة أو أحداث مزعجة (مع حال التكرار مثل always دائما, continually باستمرار..الخ)
My brother was always taking my toys when we were young.
أخي كان دائما يأخذ ألعابي عندما كنا صغارا.
• to describe an action in progress in the past that was interrupted by another action.
لوصف حدث في حالة استمرار في الماضي حيث ان هذا الحدث موقوف بحدث آخر.
While I was driving, I saw a cat in the street.
بينما كنت أقود, رأيت سيارة في الشارع.
Time Clauses تعابير الوقت (when, while, as, as soon as)
• We use the Past Progressive and the Past Simple in the same sentence when one action interrupted another in the past. We use the Past Progressive for the longer action and the Past Simple for the shorter action.
نستخدم {الماضي المستمر} و { الماضي البسيط } في {نفس الجملة} عندما يُقاطع أحد الأفعال الفعل الآخر وذلك في الماضي.
وإننا نستخدم الماضي المستمر للحدث ( الأطول ) , ونستخدم الماضي البسيط للحدث الأقصر.
In this case we usually use while, when or as.
في هذه الحالة فإننا نستخدم ضمائر الوصل while , when, as
لاحظ الأمثلة التالية:
في الجملة التالية وضع لك الشرطة المائلة ليخبرك أن بإمكانك استخدام أحد هذه الضمائر.

Note: ملاحظة
We commonly use as soon as with the Past Simple.
عادة نستخدم عبارة as soon as والتي تعني = حالما , في الماضي البسيط.
As soon as we arrived on the island, we ran to the beach.
بينما وصلنا الجزيرة, ركضنا إلى الشاطيء.

used to + base form expresses permanent states, past habits or repeated actions in the past.
used to + مع الشكل الرئيسي للفعل تعبر عن حالات دائما, عادات قديمة أو أحداث متكررة في الماضي.
My grandfather used to be a librarian.
اعتاد جدي أن يكون أمين مكتبة. (لاحظ أنه لان لم يعد أمين مكتبة)
He used to smoke heavily when he was younger.
اعتاد على التدخين بشدة عندما كان أصغر. (لاحظ أنه الان لم يعد يدخن بشدة أو حتى لم يعد يدخن بتاتا).

would + base form expresses past habits or describes someone’s typical behaviour in the past.
would + الشكل الرئيسي للفعل تعبر عن عادات ماضية أو لوصف سلوك نموذجي لأحدهم في الماضي.
Every evening he would do his homework, watch TV and go to bed quite early.
كان كل مساء يؤدي واجبه المنزلي, يشاهد التلفاز ويذهبه لفراشه في وقت مبكر.
ملاحظة:
قد تتسائل ما الفائدة من would هنا ؟ انها ساعدتك على التعبير عن أفعال ماضي في مصدرها الرئيسي دون الحاجة إلى تصريفها.
